Altoona, Pa. – Alleghenies Ahead – a 16-month, collaborative project between the six counties of Pennsylvania's Southern Alleghenies region to identify implementable strategies for a stronger future. Guided by the principle to "plan regionally, implement locally," the project will include customized action plans for Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties. This process will determine community goals and aspirations in terms of community development in the fields of transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, housing, and more, toward a sustainable future – a future with more choices and opportunities for all residents for the region.
“Over 75 individuals in the region will serve on county-level steering committees,” said Lindsay Pyle, Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission’s Community and Economic Development Program Manager. “Throughout the project, these individuals will engage with the public through ‘kitchen table conversations’ to discuss key issues and options,” Pyle continued.
At the end of May, these committees will be hosting open houses to solicit public feedback on ideas generated by the committees to date. The project will continue through 2017 and into early 2018.
“Over the course of the project, their interactions with the broader community will inform the values, vision, planning principles, and priorities incorporated into the final action plans,” concluded Pyle.
A website, AllegheniesAhead.com, has been established as a digital platform for the project and will house online surveys and ways for the public to comment, stay informed and learn more about the process. The first survey is currently available at AllegheniesAhead.com and the public is encouraged to participate.
Alleghenies Ahead is sponsored by the Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development Commission, the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development, and the counties of Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset. Guiding the entire process is czb, a planning consultancy based in Alexandria, Virginia.
